The development site is located to the north of an industrial area of Barking which is undergoing large-scale redevelopment.
Thames Road is an axial road with medium scale industrial uses lining both sides. To the north residential estates wrap around a large school and associated grounds before the Ripple, a historic watercourse, creates a stark boundary to the industrial land.
The public realm strategy arranges the central space into two book- ending nodes and a residential heart.
Planting to the south and north greens Thames Road and reinforces the ecological richness of the Ripple Greenway enhancements respectively.
The residential heart is arranged into a residential street with private amenity defensible space, a central linear garden and a pedestrian and cycle boulevard, which provides wider strategic links.
The landscape layout creates well organised hierarchy of spaces with two pocket squares connected by a north-south axial route.
The public ground comprises the shared pedestrian and cycle route connecting Thames Road with the ripple, a linear garden with informal social spaces, sustainable drainage and integrated play-on-the-way, and entrance treatments residential, commercial and ancillary uses.
The development celebrates the Ripple-side location, bringing activity and ecological enhancements to the Greenway. Opportunities for play, socialising, dining out and movement network which promotes active and sustainable transport, come together to create a vibrant space focused on the well being of people and nature.
